Sunday Night Sondheim – Korean “Sweeney Todd”

| October 26, 2008 | 4 Comments

I have to admit that I was blown away by this recording of “Green Finch and Linnet Bird” from Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd.  This clip is part of a Korean on-air radio recording. The singer, Esther Ryu, possesses a truly angelic voice.  And this beautiful song is even more lyrical when sung in Korean.  Trust me on this one.

Magical.

Does Esther Ryu have a website or something to find out more about her?

Did you hear Gwang Ho’s version of “not while i’m around”. He is part of the Korean cast and his will blow you away completely. It brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it. There is a version on you tube where he is acting it out and it’s amazing.

wow, Marco – just checked it out. His voice is marvelous. I’m planning to have a few of his videos for the next posting. I see he was one of the leads in Phantom as well. Looks like Korea has a thriving musical theatre “industry”, which is very exciting. I’d be interested in how well they did in mimicking some of Sondheim’s witty lyrics, especially the double-entendres, etc.

thanks again, marco, for the heads up.
