The Glenwood Avenue Arts District is once again well-represented in Chicago’s non-Equity Joseph Jefferson nominations. Lifeline Theatre and its neighbor Theo Ubique garnered 27 Jeff nominations between them—14 for Lifeline, 13 for Ubique. Even Bohemian Theatre Ensemble threw in a couple of nods. Just up the street a little bit, City Lit rolled in with three nominations.

But the rest of the Chicago area wasn’t ignored. Circle Theatre in Forest Park came away with nine nominations, Redmoon got eight, House got seven, Griffin got six, and Bailiwick and Steep Theatre (fresh off the first season in it’s new space) and Blindfaith came away with five each.

What’s interesting is the diversity of shows which got nominated. Lifeline’s nominations are split up between three shows: Mariette in Ecstasy got seven nominations, The Mark of Zorro got five, and the Picture of Dorian Gray got two. Ubique also had three shows nominated: Evita (7), Jacques Brel’s Lonesome Losers of the Night (5) and Belle Barth: If I Embarrass You Tell Your Friends, which got one nomination for its star, Bethany Thomas.

On the other side of the spectrum from new works and adaptations are Circle’s three shows: Enchanted April (4 nominations), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (3) and Hay Fever (2). Good productions whether new plays or old, seem to work for the Jeff Committee.

Nine of the 30 nominated theatres had more than one show nominated: Lifeline, Ubique, Circle, Griffin, Redmoon, Steep, City Lit, Eclipse and Dog & Pony. The House’s seven nominations came from just one show: The Rose and the Rime. Bailiwick’s five nominations came from it’s resurrection of A Christmas Schooner. And Blindfaith’s nods came from Woody Guthrie’s American Song.

The chances that Theo Ubique’s Fred Anzevino will walk away with a Jeff are pretty good: he garnered three nominations for his work on both Evita and Lonesome Losers. Amanda Hartley will definitely get a Jeff. She’s the only nominee in the supporting actress in a musical category, for her work in Griffin Theatre’s The Robber Bridegroom.

The Non-Equity Jeff Awards will be Monday, June 8, at the Park West, 322 W. Armitage, Chicago, IL. Doors open for a cash bar at 6:00 p.m., with a light buffet at 6:30 p.m., and presentation at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door.
