Not the best way to get out of jury duty…

He’d rather count the wrinkles on his dog’s balls than do jury duty???  Huh?

What the Shrek? Regis Philbin promotes ‘Shrek the Musical’ (and his upcoming TV show)

Regis Philbin - Shrek the MusicalRegis Philbin was seen dressed up in the Broadway musical Shrek costume used in the production playing down the street to pick up some laughs on David Letterman‘s show last Wednesday night.  The entire “presentation” ingeniuously was a two-fold promotion: not only does Shrek: The Musical get some publicity, but so does Regis, who will be hosting a network revival of Who Wants to be a Millionaire this summer on ABC.

FYI: Shrek the Musical is set to begin its national tour here in Chicago.

Random Thoughts – Dungeons and Dragons, Frumpy Singers, Hungry Polar Bears – Oh My!

  • Looks like there’s a designer catfight regarding Michelle Obama’s wardrobe.  Watch out for the flying stilettos!!

Boyle

  • Take a middle-aged frumpy matron, put her on “Britain’s Got Talent”, have her sing “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Miz, and you get an amazing and touching performance guaranteed to make you smile and maybe even shed a joyful tear.
  • Dungeons and Dragons – I have no idea how to play it, but – judging from the intensity I have seen at coffee houses from the role-playing game’s fans – it is worth noting that the co-creator of the game, Dave Arneson, has died at the tender age of 61.  What better way to live your life than to bring fun to millions of D&D enthusiasts.
  • Where do you find a course dedicated to teaching one how to create a viral video?  At Northwestern, it seems: YouTubing 101.   How fun is that?  (so, do they let people sit in???)

A beautifully imperfect love:

Julie Andrews, live at the Antwerp train station – this is fun!

There’s a collection of these YouTube train station performances, but this so far is my favorite.  I love it when all the kids come running down the stairway to join in.  Priceless.

Thespian mice discovered in Goodman Theatre’s rafters

Goodman Theatre, home of great theatre and thespian Mice.

In a major scientific discovery, Dr. Vince Shlomi from SW Labs has verified that a high-intellect species of mice has been discovered in the rafters of Goodman Theatre in Chicago’s Loop

“It was the weirdest thing,” said Anna Clifford, Goodman stage manager and Starbucks barista.  “We’d come in for rehearsals, and things would be moved around.  The lighting would be adjusted, or the scripts would be chewed on.  I just figured it was someone from the cast of Mary Poppins.”

These 2 thespian mice from Goodman stand for their bows. The discovery occurred a week into the run of Goodman’s present production, Come Back, Little Shicksa.  On a routine check of the lighting, set designer and taxi driver Radhakant Baijpai, noticed that a Shakespeare book of plays was tucked between the rafter beams.  “I bent down to pick up the book,” said Rhada “and it started to move – so  I grabbed the book, and there underneath was five or 6 of those critters, all moving their arms wildly and emoting!”

So as to avoid calling in health inspectors, the Goodman box office placed PETA-approved traps amongst the rafters, along with copies of  the American classic  about the downfall of a washed-up Avon lady – Dearth of a Saleswoman – as bait. The theatre-loving mice were soon caught and  trucked off to SW Labs, which is where they discovered that the mice responded more to Shakespeare than to slices of cheese.

When Goodman artistic-director and Elvis-impersonator Robert Falls was asked for a comment regarding the theatre mice, he just offered a terse “It’s all much ado about nothing”.

Random Thoughts – Jonas Brothers ‘n Stuff

Is silver the new black???

  • I’m saddened to hear that the Borders on Michigan Ave. will be closing within the next year.  :-(     This has been my hangout whenever friends/family come to visit, and want to shop ALL day on Michigan Avenue.  Now where do I seek refuge?

target_bullseyeSeeing how much Target contributes to the local arts scene, I promise (for Lent?) to do more of my shopping there.  For example, check out Target’s 2-for-1 ticket deals at Congo Square, Steppenwolf, and Lookingglass Theatre, as well as $20 Sundays at Goodman

Star in the making? “Kittens inspired by Kittens”

Ran across this video over at Andrew Sullivan‘s blog, The Daily Dish.  Take a look/listen and see if you don’t agree with me that this girl was meant to be an actress.  She has all of the inflections down (like the 3 varying screams!  LOL), as well as a ginormous amount of creativity.  And very, very funny, and as cute as can be.  Love it!

50,000 Unique Visitors!

5 0 , 0 0 0

It’s hard for me to believe, but as of yesterday morning (February 9th) around 10am, I have now reached 50,000 unique visitors!!!  I’ve been delightfully surprised at how popular this little blog of mine has become. Now I know it’s no PerezHilton (I only wish) or DrudgeReport (thank god), but I’m extremely proud of this cyber-endeavor.  And I only see bigger numbers ahead – case in point, it took me 13 months to reach my first 25,000 unique visitors, but the next 25k took only 4 months (now averaging between 300-400 views per day).  Pretty cool, huh?

I have plans for the future, including hiring a few theatre critics as well as blog-exclusive video.  Stay tuned!

Thanks ever so much to all of my theatre-crazy (and, just, simply crazy) readers.  I truly appreciate your interest and return visits.

Cheers,

Scotty Zacher
